The Leonardo AW109E Power is a light three-tonne class twin-engine multi-mission helicopter with high cruise speed, excellent performance and competitive acquisition and direct operating costs. The model was launched in 1995 with the goal of giving the A109 true single-engine performance. The A109E features a pair of 640-s.h.p. Pratt & Whitney Canada PW206C turboshafts with FADEC, a new four-blade main rotor head with a titanium hub, retractable landing gear stowed in sponsons (not the fuselage), and modifications to the tail rotor and fin. It also features updates to the fuel system and cabin structure, a new instrument panel with flat-panel displays, and changes to the transmission and systems. The A109E was certified in Italy in May 1996, and renamed the AW109E in 2001. A version with the 760-shp Turbomeca Arrius 2K1 engine was offered, but civilian customers have overwhelmingly ordered the P&WC version. An optional increased gross weight kit raises the maximum weight to 3,000 kg (6,614 lb.).
